I was watching an old episode of The Flash and realized I haven’t seen Jesse L. Martin (Detective Joe West) on the show recently. I remember him taking a break a few years ago, but I can’t recall why. Did he ever disclose what caused his medical leave?

Jesse L. Martin did indeed take a medical leave of absence from The Flash in 2018. While the exact details of his condition weren’t publicly disclosed, reports indicated he suffered a back injury during the show’s hiatus that year [Entertainment Weekly]. This explains why he appeared mostly seated in scenes leading up to his leave.
Thankfully, it appears the issue wasn’t permanent. Martin returned to The Flash after his recovery.
